According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), there are currently 15.2 million refugees worldwide. Most refugees and displaced persons reside in urban areas or camps in the Global South. The health of refugees is a complex topic with important implications for policy and practice on a global scale. The complex humanitarian emergencies often associated with refugee flows pose significant challenges to the health of displaced peoples. In addition to morbidity and mortality directly resulting from war or other violence, disruption in infrastructure associated with humanitarian emergencies pose great challenges for public health and medical care. The process of migration from conflict or disaster can be associated with further injury and illness.
