New York City is located on the eastern Atlantic coast of the USA, at the mouth of the Hudson River. The city is divided into five districts called boroughs: Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Manhattan and Staten Island are completely on their own land mass while Brooklyn and Queens occupy the western portion of Long Island. The Bronx, to the north, remains attached to the New York State mainland. The city is often called the “Big Apple” and is the largest city in the USA with over eight million residents including 2.9 million foreign-born residents.
New York City has for centuries served as a major point of entry for immigrants. More than 100 million Americans are estimated to be directly related to immigrants who passed through Ellis Island during its tenure as a federal immigration station.
