The UN Right to Development was established by the “Declaration on the Right to Development” adopted by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 41/128 in 1986. The roots of the UN Right to Development can be found in the UN Charter, the Declaration of Human Rights and in the Covenant on Economic and Social Rights where the individual’s right to participate in the economic and social life of the community and to be able to attain adecent standard of living are recognized. Various UN documents also assert the eradication of poverty and economic development to be acollective responsibility. Nonetheless, the widening gap between rich and poor both within and between nations has made it clear that despite international aid, developing nations have been facing obstacles to long-term economic development.
