An inspection is a formal review process usually performed by several members of a software development team and at least one person from the software quality assurance (SQA) group. Note that small companies may not have dedicated SQA personnel.
An inspection can be conducted for any software artifact, such as requirements, design documents, or code. As originally defined, an inspection has five prescribed steps:
- 1.
Overview. One of the individuals responsible for producing the artifact highlights the main points in the document and distributes it to the other participants.
- 2.
Preparation. Each participant reviews the document and compiles two lists: (1) a list of likely faults and (2) a list of items that are unclear. Inspection members may also have at their disposal a list of fault types and their frequency compiled from previous inspections.
- 3.
Inspection meeting. One member of the inspection team called a moderator goes through the document, making sure that every line is covered...
