Arnold van Gennep was the first to recognize the existence of the phenomenon liminality in the making of a person within the African cultural world. He used the construct of liminality to refer to the idea of a self in the condition of a transition between. He therefore used the concept to designate the experience of most African youth, inhabiting a world in between the state of “no longer” and that of “not yet.”
