Edouard Ménétriés was born at Paris, France, on October 2, 1802. He was employed as conserver of rarities at the Zoological Museum in the Imperial Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg, Russia. He was an authority on Lepidoptera and Coleoptera. He made extensive collections in Russia, Siberia, Alaska, and California. He died at St. Petersburg on April 10, 1861.
