Reference work entry
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-1-4020-6359-6_1045

The duplication of a DNA segment coding for a gene; gene duplication produces two identical copies which may retain their original function allowing the organism to produce larger amounts of a specific protein. Alternatively, one of the gene copies may be lost by mutation and become a pseudogene or a duplicated gene can evolve to perform a different task.
