John Verhoogen (Figure V4) was an engineer, geologist, geophysicist, and a pioneering advocate of the role of the solid inner core in the geodynamo. He was also an inspirational mentor to a generation of students, including the Earth Scientists who first established the timescale for magnetic polarity reversals.
