Initiated in 1979, the Airey Neave Trust sponsors research into the protection of personal freedom under the law against the threat of terrorism, political violence and torture. It also provides financial support for any person who is a refugee, with particular emphasis on postgraduates and those retraining in their professions.

The Airey Neave Research Fellowships

Subjects: Research into the protection of personal freedom under the law against the threat of terrorism, political violence and torture.

Purpose: To support serious research connected with national and international law and human freedom.

Eligibility: Open to academics wishing to undertake research in the field of human freedom.

Level of Study: Research, Postdoctorate, Fellowships

Type: Fellowship

Value: £5,000 available for seminars and workshops, with certain guidelines

Length of Study: Up to 2 years

Additional Information: The trust also supports work in the following areas: (i) research into transnational networks and their implications for international security. The study will investigate the use of networks by criminal and terrorist organizations for activities such as money-laundering and arms sales (Centre of International Studies, Cambridge University); and (ii) research assistance to the Metropolitan Police in preventing, deterring, disrupting and detecting terrorist activity, particularly in its preparatory stages.
