The Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation is a non-profit corporation registered with the state of New York. It was established to award financial aid to mature creative painters, sculptors and printmakers.

The Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Emergency Grant

Subjects: Painting, sculpture and printmaking.

Purpose: To provide interim financial assistance to creative visual artists whose need is the result of unforeseen catastrophic incident.

Eligibility: Open to painters, sculptors and printmakers who can demonstrate a minimum of 10 years of involvement in a mature phase of their work and who do not have the resources to meet the costs incurred by a catastrophic event, e.g. fire, flood or emergency medical expenses. The disciplines of film, photography or related forms are not eligible unless the work involves directly, or can be interpreted as, painting or sculpture.

Application Procedure: Applicants must complete and submit an application form which is available from the Foundation throughout the year and may be requested by telephone. Second party requests are honoured only when the applicant is physically unable to communicate with the Foundation.

Additional Information: Maturity is based on the level of technical, intellectual and creative development of the artist. The programme does not cover general indebtedness, dental work, unemployment, capital improvements, long-term disabilities or project funding. Review procedures for completed applications begin as soon as they are received. Full review generally takes about four weeks from the time an application is complete. Situations with imminent deadlines will receive priority. When a situation warrants it, reviews can be completed within 24 to 48 hours.

Gottlieb Foundation Individual Support Grants

Subjects: Painting, sculpture and printmaking.

Purpose: To recognize and support serious, fully committed painters, sculptors and printmakers who are in financial need.

Eligibility:Open to creative painters, sculptors and printmakers who have been in a mature phase of their work for at least 20 years and require financial assistance to continue this work. United States residency is not required. The Gottlieb Foundation does not provide funding for organizations, projects of any type, educational institutions, students, graphic artists or those working in crafts. The disciplines of photography, film, video or related forms are not eligible unless the work directly involves, or can be interpreted as, painting or sculpture.

Application Procedure: Applicants must include a current application form, available from the foundation, and a small group of slides of the artist’s work that illustrates the progressive development of the art for at least a 20-year period. These slides must be properly labelled and dated. Applicants must also include a written statement in narrative form. This statement should include outside jobs which have helped support the artist’s career, changes in artistic approach that have occurred, and other facts which can aid the review panel in forming an accurate picture. All aspects of artistic history, i.e. education, exhibitions, etc., should be described, and dates must be provided for all information. Financial disclosure, which entails completing a disclosure page and submitting a copy of a federal tax return for the past year, is necessary in the determination of financial need. A stamped addressed envelope for the return of supplementary materials must also be included.
