Years of Life Lost

Reference work entry

Years of Life Lost (YLL) refers to the amount of time lost (in years) due to premature death. YLLs are used to refer to standard expected years of life lost with age weighting and discounting. The general formula is as follows.
$$YLL = {{{{KC}_{e}^{ra}} \over {{\gamma \beta}^2}}[e^{-(\gamma + \beta)(L + a)} [-(\gamma + \beta)(L + a) - 1] - e^{-(\gamma + \beta)a} [ - (\gamma + \beta)a - 1]] + {{1 - K} \over {\gamma}}(1 - e^{- \gamma L})}$$
