Tryptophan Degradation

Reference work entry

Three enzymes catalyze tryptophan degradation: Tryptophan 2,3-dioxygenase (TDO), indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) and indoleamine-pyrrole 2,3-dioxygenase-like 1 (INDOL 1). Tryptophan is converted to N-formyl-kynurenine by oxidation, resulting in cleavage of the five-membered indole ring.
