Trypanosoma brucei is a parasite belonging to the genus Trypanosoma and transmitted by a tsetse fly. The species Trypanosoma brucei is traditionally divided into three subspecies, Trypanosoma brucei brucei, Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense and Trypanosoma brucei gambiense. The parasites are morphologically indistinguishable. T.b. brucei is not pathogenic for humans. T.b. rhodesiense causes East African sleeping sickness and T.b. gambiense causes West African sleeping sickness.
