Proxy Rating of Quality of Life in Dementia

Reference work entry

Proxies initially rate patients' quality of life lower than dementia patients themselves and also rate quality of life lower than patients during disease progression. Response shift may explain part of the difference between patient and proxy rating. For patients it is profitable to be able to adapt to newly occurring disease stages and not perceiving a gradual decrease in quality of life. In proxies, response shift probably is different from response shift in patients, which may have implications when using proxy measures.
