Prostatitis is considered an umbrella term with multiple categories of diagnosis. Basically, it is described as an inflammation of the prostate gland. Prostatitis only occurs in males because women do not have prostate glands. Prostatitis has been classified by the National Institute of Health (NIH) in four categories: Category 1: Acute abacterial prostatitis, Category 2: Chronic bacterial prostatitis, Category 3: Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS), Category 4: Asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis.
