Heterogeneous hematologic disorders characterized by ineffective hematopoiesis and peripheral blood cytopenia with a variable risk of progression to acute myelogenous leukemia. Most MDS patients present with symptoms of anemia and transfusion support is often needed. Chronic anemia is the most important clinical feature. In MDS patients the quality of life is reduced and fatigue is considered to be the most influential symptom.
