Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, an acid-fast, rod-shaped bacillus. The disease mainly affects the skin, peripheral nerves, mucosa of the upper respiratory tract and also the eyes, apart from some other structures (WHO).
