Follicle Stimulating Hormone
A gonadotropic hormone released by the pituitary as part of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonad axes in both male and female mammals. One of its specific roles in the menstrual cycle is to stimulate the ovarian follicle cells to produce and release estradiol as part of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. FSH also plays a role in ovulation.
