Disease Reservoir in Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT)

Reference work entry

Definition

Pool of infected humans or animals that are a source of infection and therefore drive the transmission of Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT). Screening and treatment programs aiming at eliminating the HAT reservoir has always been the cornerstone of the control of West African sleeping sickness. Actions targeting the animal reservoir are common in East African sleeping sickness but the role of an animal reservoir in West African sleeping sickness is unclear.
