Definition

A chronic disease associated with elevated levels of sugar in the blood. It can be caused by too little or no insulin (type 1, also called insulin dependent diabetes mellitus or IDDM), resistance to insulin (type 2, also called non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus or NIDDM), or both. The high levels of glucose in the blood can damage a whole range of body tissues and organs.
