Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Need

Reference work entry

According to a WHO-recommendation, severity and degree of periodontal diseases in an individual and also in a section of a population are assessed by the Community Periodontal Index of treatment Need (CPITN). This index takes three features as basis: (1) bleeding on probing, (2) dental calculus, and (3) pocketing. Periodontal diseases are classified into five degrees according to their severity ranging from 0 (healthy, inflammation-free gingiva and periodontium) to 4 (most severe form of periodontitis).
