Categories of Health-Related Quality of Life Measures

Reference work entry

Health-Related Quality of Life Measures (HRQL) can be categorized into two groups based on their content: generic and specific. Generic measures can be divided in health profiles and utility measures. Specific HRQL measures focus on aspects of health status that are specific to the area of primary interest. The measure may be specific to a certain disease (such as dementia), to a certain population (such as Alzheimer's disease patients, or proxies), to a certain function or domain, or to a specific problem. Overall, specific measures in theory possess a higher grade of responsiveness.
