Definition

Subintimal pathological process in the wall of large and medium arteries (aorta, coronaries, carotid arteries) involving accumulation of lipid material, inflammation, wall thickening and possible obstruction of blood flow. Main risk factors of atherosclerosis are cholesterol, hypertension and smoking. In many studies light to moderate drinking, in turn, appears to be protective. Clinical consequences include myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke and peripheral artery disease.
