Abstract:
Alcohol abuse/dependence is one of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders, which exhibits a complicated interaction with other psychiatric disorders and psychopathological symptoms. It is distinguished by multiple negative effects on the individual’s somatic health, psychological and emotional well-being and social adjustment.
There is substantial evidence that the QoL of alcohol dependent subjects is severely impaired and should be closely monitored on a regular basis. There is a definitive need to consider the psychosocial needs of alcohol dependent individuals, in addition to the measurement of biomedical outcomes. QoL data may be a part of an ongoing healthcare system for alcohol dependent individuals, both at a group and an individual level. They can be used in research and clinical practice and provide health carers and administrators with valuable information regarding specific areas of QoL deficits that should be addressed in any type of intervention.
Regarding the use of relevant instruments, the number of QoL measurement tools currently available may cover a quite broad spectrum of the needs of health carers depending on the diversity of the factors required to be assessed and the scope of the measurement in clinical and research contexts. Several instruments show robust psychometric properties regarding their capacity to identify QoL deficits and highlight changes following detoxification and abstinence from alcohol use. In addition, QoL measures have a definite role as an outcome measure, evaluating various types of interventions including medical, psychotherapeutic, psychosocial, or psychoeducational within a comprehensive and continuous basis of treatment for alcohol dependence.
