Abstract:

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is the fourth most frequent diagnosis in psychiatry. Patients with OCD do suffer from obsessive thinking and compulsive behaviors, which impact negatively on their everyday life.

Although intensive research in treatment of OCD the disorder often remains untreated for years, resulting in a chronic and disabling course. Therefore it is not surprising that quality of life (QOL) in patients with OCD is lower than in general population. Studies assessing the comparison of OCD patients to other mental disorder samples have yielded inconsistent results.

OCD affects the lives of both patients and their relatives. Clinical observations suggest that family members of patients with OCD are involved in the patients’ rituals, which tends to result in impairment of everyday life of these families. Many authors have documented the stress and burden on relatives living with patients with OCD. But no one has reported on QOL in relatives of OCD patients.

In this chapter the impairment of OCD symptoms on QOL in patients and their relatives is reported. The results of the present studies show that QOL in patients with OCD was lower in some domains of the WHOQOL-BREF (World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment-BREF) when compared with patients of other psychiatric disorder. In addition, compared with the general population, QOL in relatives of patients with OCD was also lower in WHOQOL-BREF domains. These results are very important for the psychiatric health care services. Because, these findings suggest that the professions working with relatives must have an approach focusing not only on the care given to the ill person, but also on the relatives’ situation and their own QOL.
