The interior and western belts of the Canadian Cordillera include all of western Canada west of the Richardson and Mackenzie mountains, the Northern Rocky Mountain Trench, and the Columbia Mountains. The regions occupy a large part of British Columbia, most of the Yukon Territory, and a small part of the southwestern Mackenzie district; and they cover an area of about 960,000 km2 (375,000 sq mi.)

History of Geological Investigations

The earliest geological studies of the region were dominated by G. M. Dawson, R. G. McConnell, and R. A. Daly. These geologists, in particular Dawson and McConnell, established a broad outline of the western Cordilleran geology through extensive field investigations during the latter part of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century. Not until the late 1950s, however, were sufficient data available for the compilation of a comprehensive synthesis of the geology of the entire Cordillera.
