Geography and geological importance

The geology of Cyprus (Fig. 128) is a microcosm of the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East as a whole and has played an important role in the development of plate tectonics theory, especially concerning the formation of ophiolites. Ophiolites are fragments of oceanic crust and mantle exposed on land. Cyprus geology also provides insights into the paleogeography of the Tethys Ocean that once separated the Eurasian and African continents.
