Geography and topography

Bosnia and Hercegovina (B&H), which is included in the N Balkan region, consists of two historical and natural wholes: Bosnia, its N and larger part, and Hercegovina, its S and smaller part. In the N, W and S it is surrounded by Croatia through which it has a corridor to the Adriatic Sea. In the E, it is bounded by Yugoslavia.

B&H is a typical mountain area and the highest mountains, mostly about 2000 m, are located along the Black Sea and Adriatic Sea watershed. Geographically, the area can be divided in three parts: (1) the N mainly Rat and water-rich area S of the River Sava; (2) the S and SW water-poor karst area and (3) the largest mountainous waterrich area with several hydroelectric power stations located between these two areas. The largest rivers are the Sava with the tributaries Una, Vrbas, Bosna and Drina in Bosnia and Neretva in Hercegovina.

B&H with its surface area of 51 564 km2 is one of the smaller European countries.
