For the M/G/1 queueing system, with L defined as the steady-state expected number of customers in the system, λ the customer arrival rate, 1/μ the expected service time and σ2 the variance of the service distribution then
where ρ = λ/μ. This equation is known as the Pollaczek-Khintchine (P-K) formula. Sometimes, the formulas for mean queue size, L q, mean line delay, W q, and mean system waiting time, W, which can be easily derived from L using Little's formula are also called P-K formulas. Queueing theory.
