For a given problem, a collection of rules or steps that guide one to a solution that may or may not be optimal. The rules are usually based on the problem's characteristics, intuition, hunches, good ideas, or reasonable processes for searching.  Greedy algorithms;  Tabu search;  Simulated annealing.
