Philately, or stamp collecting, is an old hobby. Stamps illustrating geologic features are common; mountains, volcanoes, glaciers, lakes, waterfalls, rivers, minerals, and fossils are frequently illustrated. The number of stamps of geologic interest runs into the hundreds. Scott's Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue (1970), one of the important reference books of philately, is published yearly. Lithos and Minereaux et Fossiles, two French journals, regularly report new stamp issues that highlight geological features. The articles typically contain full-color illustrations and provide descriptive narratives for each stamp.
