Geological fieldwork is an activity that engages most professional geologists sometime during their career. Even the so-called armchair geologist, or laboratory type has occasion to work in the field. Going into the field to conduct surveys, to collect samples, to carry out mapping programs, to provide ground truth for photointerpretive maps, or for instructional purposes is regarded by many geologists as practically a right. Whether in public domain (or Crown land) or on private land, certain codes of conduct must be observed because access for fieldwork is in fact a privilege, not a right.
Associated with the rapid growth of the earth sciences are ever greater numbers of students and professionals making such field visits. An increase in the numbers of accidents at quarries and mine sites associated with these visiting geologists has prompted legislation in some regions that limits or restricts their activities.
