Environmental management is in the eyes of the beholder. What may appear to be a managed environment to some, may to others be unmanaged or mismanaged. Environmental management is interpreted to mean in this entry the deliberate planning and administration of policies that determine the status of the biosphere in which humans live. It covers a broad spectrum of activities that involve the air, water, and land of the planet Earth. Management ranges from the local to the national and international, from policies instituted by private persons to those by industry and governmental bodies. Our concern here involves general policy that has developed from legal and mandated directives with the concurrence of societal objectives and aspirations. It is assumed that decisions reached by environmental managers have been made after careful examination of a pertinent database that was established for this purpose.
