One of seven regions of year-round relatively high pressure where the barometer typically registers values higher than circumjacent areas and where the air is drier, skies clearer, and surface wind speeds lower.
The Azores High is a large subtropical anticyclone centered between 25°N and 35°N in the Atlantic Ocean. It extends to great elevations, with deep tropical easterlies on its equatorward side and middle-latitude westerlies on its poleward side. This very persistent and quasistationary feature of the atmosphere's circulation is elongated in an east-west direction, with its center of highest pressure located over the eastern portion of the subtropical Atlantic. It is most pronounced in summer, when land-water temperature contrasts are most pronounced, and has an extreme summer-time position of about 34°N to 38°N. In winter, it is less pronounced and is at somewhat lower latitudes.
