Phylogeny and Taxonomy

The application of chemosystematic and molecular systematic methods has clarified the taxonomic position of the family Thermomonosporaceae. This taxon together with the families Nocardiopsaceae and Streptosporangiaceae is classified in the suborder Streptosporangineae, one of the ten suborders of the order Actinomycetales (Stackebrandt et al., 1997). The family Thermomonosporaceae (Stackebrandt et al., 1997) emended (Zhang et al., 2001) includes the genera Actinomadura (Lechevalier and Lechevalier, 1970a), Actinocorallina (Iinuma et al., 1994) emended (Zhang et al., 2001), Spirillospora (Couch, 1963), and the type genus Thermomonospora (Henssen, 1957) emended (Zhang et al., 2001). Members of these taxa form a distinct phyletic line in the 16S rRNA gene tree (Zhang et al., 1998; Zhang et al., 2001) and can be distinguished from one another using a combination of morphological, physiological and chemical features (Trujillo and Goodfellow, 1997; Zhang et al., 1998; M...
