The autunite structure is characterized by layers of (P,As,V)O4 tetrahedra and highly distorted UO6 octahedra with A ions and H2O molecules occupying cavities between the layers.
Minerals of the autunite and meta-autunite groups share the general structural formula
in the autunites,
- A :
-
= Ca,Na2,Ba,Mg,Fe2+,Cu,Mn
- X :
-
= P,As,V
- n :
-
= 8–12
and, in the meta-autunites,
- A :
-
= K 2,(NH4)2,Ca,Ba,Mg,Fe2+,Co,Cu,Zn
- X :
-
= P,As
- n :
-
= 4–8
The two groups differ in water content and in the polytypic stacking of the layers. The transition between the two groups occurs near or somewhat above room...
