Grey desert soil develops from loess-like parent material, mainly under desert vegetation in temperate arid zones. The soil is characterised by thin gravel-bearing layers. It has a well-formed crust, irregular cracks on the surface, a high lime content, surface aggregation and salt accumulation. It is common in Xinjiang in Western China. Smaller areas are also found in the northwest corner of the Yinchuan Plain in Ningxia, the Hetao Plain in Inner Mongolia, and west of the Hexi Corridor in Gansu.
