Solar energy can reach the ground through shortwave solar radiation, but the longwave heat radiation emitted from the surface is absorbed by the atmosphere. This increases the temperature of the surface and the lower atmosphere because it functions like a greenhouse. The excessive carbon dioxide emitted from fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum absorbs heat and prevents it from being released into the outer atmosphere. It is therefore considered a cause of the greenhouse effect.
