Goreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia, Turkey
This national park is located in Nevsehir Province in central Turkey, and it has a core protected area of 95.76 km2. The Goreme Valley is spectacular and was sculpted by natural wind erosion, and it and the surrounding areas are dotted with refuge shelters in the rocks. These shelters demonstrate the artistic style of the Byzantine Empire and the post-idol destruction periods. There are also traditional living structures that are from the early fourth century, including simple residences, villages and underground towns.
