This is a type of physical weathering that shapes landforms. In high-latitude areas and mountains at mid-latitudes, where the annual average temperature is below 0 °C, and the annual and diurnal variations are large, frost action splits apart rocks. Landforms sculpted by frost weathering are common in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and in mountains more than 1,500 m above sea level.
