A foehn is a local wind system in which mountain airflow rises on the windward slope (refer to topographic rain) and sinks on the leeward slope to become warmer and drier. The humidity of the region the wind passes decreases due to the rapid increase in temperature. In some places, the temperature during the day can increase suddenly to above 20 °C, and it is very dry. Foehns often dry and kill fruit trees and crops, reduce their productivity and cause bush and rural fires.
