This is a type of sand dune landscape composed of moving dunes. Because of the sparse vegetation cover, sand dunes move easily due to wind to form new dunes. The velocity of dune movement is related to its height, the wind speed and the conditions of the underlying surface. Dunes generally move several metres to more than 10 m per year. Fluid sand dunes can be found in many desert marginal areas in China. Dune movement is a serious threat to agricultural, industrial and transport facilities. To prevent scenarios in which sand advance causes human retreat, several afforestation projects have been implemented and have managed to turn fluid dunes into fixed or semi-fixed dunes (Fig. 9).
