Epeirogenesis is the vertical crustal movements responsible for the formation of continents and large oceanic basins. The uplift of the Late Ordovician to Early Carboniferous lacuna in the North China Platform, the subsidence during the Middle Carboniferous sedimentary period, the uplift of the extensive Pre-Devonian peneplain and the Devonian subsidence of the Yangtze Platform are all typical examples of epeirogenic movements.
