This site is located in the southwestern Sichuan Basin and has an area of 154 km2. It is a basaltic fault-block mountain. Weathering of the columnar joints as caused the rock columns to collapse, which has shaped the present landscape. The main peak is Jinding (Golden Top), which has an elevation of 3,079 m. The climate and vegetation vary vertically. The site is one of the four major Buddhist holy places in China and has had a reputation as ‘the prettiest mountain in the world’ since ancient times. Its famous scenic attractions include the auspicious light of Jinding, the white water and autumn wind, the emerald colour of Lingyan, the moonlight of Xiang Pond, and ten old fairy houses.
