The concept of ecological restoration was introduced to China in the early 1980s. It has many definitions, and the most representative definition is the one adopted by the US Natural Resource Council in 1995, which defines it as a process of restoring a system to be similar to what it was before being disturbed. The Society for Ecological Restoration International (SER) has given several definitions for ecological restoration since the 1990s. It currently defines ecological restoration as the process of assisting an ecosystem that has been degraded, damaged or destroyed in being restored (2002). This definition is concise and well-recognized.
