Taishan Mountain ranks first of China’s Wuyue (Five Peaks) and is located in Tai’an City, Shandong Province. In the past, Taishan was called Daishan (Dai Mountain), Daizong (Dai Origin) and Dailing (Dai Range), and it has only been called Taishan since the Spring and Autumn Period. It is a fault-block mountain composed of Archaean metamorphic rock (Taishan complex rock). Its main peak, Yuhuang Peak, has an elevation of 1,532 m and a relative height difference of more than 1,400 m from the foothill plain, and so it looks exceptionally majestic. Taishan is a historic mountain subject to frequent worshipping by past emperors. Seventy-two monarchs visited it for pilgrimages before the Zhou Dynasty, and Emperor Qinshihuang, Emperor Wudi in the Han Dynasty, Emperors Gaozong and Xuanzong in the Tang Dynasty, Emperor Zhenzong in the Song Dynasty, and Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty also came to worship the heavens.
