This is a new interdisciplinary field combining earth science with scenic sites. It studies the earth science issues of scenic areas, such as the geographical location, unique geological and geomorphological features, rock characteristics, hydrological factors, atmospheric factors, geophysical fields (e.g., radiation field, magnetic field, electric field, temperature field, negative oxygen ion field, ground temperature), crustal stability, impacts of geological hazards on scenery and visitors, geological or geographical backgrounds of the cultural landscapes, and protection and scientific interpretation of the landscapes. The earth science of scenic sites plays an important role in determining the functional types, formulating development and environmental protection plans and evaluating the economic, social and environmental benefits of scenic sites.
