Desertification refers to changes to the fragile ecosystems of arid, semi-arid and sub-humid areas. The ecological balance and productivity of the ecosystems of non-desert areas may be damaged or reduced by human activities, resulting in drastic environmental changes and the formation of a desert landscape. Desertification and its mitigation have high environmental education significance and can sometimes become an important ecotourism resource.
