Synonym: Ice bar ; Riegel landscape
This is a landscape composed of transverse ridges in a glacial valley. When a glacier flows along a U-shaped valley and meets a projection or hard bedrock on the valley floor, the glacier will slip over the obstacle. When the ice melts, a transverse rock ridge will lie across the valley floor or protrude into the valley from one side. This ridge or bar may be a few dozen metres to several hundreds of metres high. Most cross walls cause the valley floor to look like terraces, and so these cross walls are also called ‘glacial terraces’ (Fig. 57).
