A cliffy gorge is a type of river valley landscape in the initial stage of development of a V-shaped valley. The valley slopes are steep or nearly vertical. The river valley is very narrow, the valley width is nearly identical to the width of the valley floor, and the river occupies the entire valley floor. Cliffy gorges often develop in areas with pronounced vertical joints in the bedrock and significant neotectonic uplift. For example, typical cliffy gorges are located in Jinsi Gorge National Geopark in Shangnan, Shaanxi Province.
